Short Brothers

Short Brothers plc is a Northern Irish aerospace company, usually referred to simply as Shorts, that is now based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Founded in 1908, Shorts was the first company in the world to make production aircraft and was a manufacturer of flying boats during the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s and Royal Air Force bombers throughout the Second World War. In the immediate post-war period it received orders for several military and experimental aircraft. From the 1960s Shorts turned primarily to the production of passenger aircraft for regional airlines, major components for aerospace prime manufacturers, and missiles for British armed forces. In 1989 the company was bought by Bombardier. Within Bombardier Aerospace, Shorts designs and manufactures nacelles, fuselages and aircraft flight control systems. Shorts is the largest manufacturing concern in Northern Ireland. Today the company's products include aircraft components and engine nacelles for its parent company Bombardier Aerospace, and for Boeing, Rolls-Royce Deutschland, General Electric and Pratt & Whitney.
